Hazardous Waste Surface Impoundment Closure
AMAI designed and provided construction oversight of the in-place closure of a hazardous waste surface impoundment which had been used for the storage of a listed hazardous waste - oil/water/solids separator sludge. A subsurface boring program conducted by AMAI indicated that clean closure was not technically or economically feasible. Major activities included:
  • Stabilization/solidification of 1,500 cubic yards of accumulated hazardous sludge
  • Installation of a RCRA cap consisting of a two-foot thick clay layer, a flexible membrane liner, a drainage system and a vegetative layer

Within three months of completion of closure activities, USEPA granted unconditional approval of unit closure.
